Peace Christmas Ornament

July 13, 2021 By patgeary

The Peace Christmas Ornament by Blackbird Designs appeared in the Just CrossStitch 2013 Ornament issue on pg 12. I stitched it in 2017 and gave it to someone (probably my step daughter) as a gift. Unfortunately I have no idea what fabric I stitched it on other than 16ct aida in a mottled blue. The only notes I made were to change blues on bird and house. It was a quick stitch as I started on December 15, 2017 and finished it on December 21, 2017. Finishing was done by Vonna Pfeiffer, The Twisted Stitcher.

Peace Ornament

It’s so pretty, I think I will stitch it again as a small, framed piece. NOTE TO SELF: I gave this one to my little sister for Christmas one year.

Noel Sampler Stocking

July 2, 2021 By patgeary

The Noel Sampler Stocking was a 2014 release for the Ladies Prim Society. I had just discovered Blackbird Designs that year so missed out on it. Fast forward to June 2021 and I was at the right place at the right time when someone offered the kit on one of the Facebook stash selling sites.

The kit included the fabric, the finishing fabric, the floss and the chart. Since I don’t stitch on linen I used a 16ct aida from my stash, lambswool, I think.

I started stitching on June 27, 2021.

Recommended Floss: Classic Colorworks and Gentle Arts

  • CC Ladybug
  • CC Straw Hat
  • CC Wilderness
  • GA Old Brick
  • GA Old Hickory
  • GA Wood Trail

Specialty  Stitches: Lazy Daisy

The kit came with green backing fabric but I had a piece of Joyeux Noel Pearl by French General that I decided to use for the back of the stocking.

And I took the last stitches on July 2, 2021.

And my thanks to my stitching friend, Jan Emerick for the lovely finish. I think I need to stitch some more of these little stockings.

Berries in Bloom

December 30, 2020 By patgeary

Berries in Bloom is a free chart offered by Hands on Designs. The stitch count was on 65 x 64 so I figured it would be a pretty quick stitch. I was also looking for a design I could use with some buttons I had purchased for another project I decided NOT to stitch.

Berries in Bloom by Hands on Design.

The picture above shows the project stitched on 32ct Vintage Tiffany from Fabrics by Stephanie. I chose to use 14ct Friendship Greene also from Fabrics by Stephanie. I switched out quite a few of the recommended threads for Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe threads.

  • DMC 3831/VMSS Burning Bush
  • DMC 309/VMSS Nexessaire Red
  • DMC 501/VMSS Dark Variegated Pine
  • DMC 469
  • DMC 367
  • DMC 610
  • DMC 3865/DMC 543

The button is merry.go.round (#10196) shown below from Just Another Button Company.

Merry-go-round button

The finished size on 14ct is 4 5/8 by 4 5/8. In hindsight, I probably should have used 16ct. I have three of the buttons so may choose to use the 16ct on the last one as I already have both 14ct piece cut and gridded.

Sampler Stocking Ornaments

December 27, 2020 By patgeary

I have the series of three Sampler Stocking Ornaments by Abby Rose Designs in my stash for a while now. I decided to get an early start on some ornaments for 2021 and pulled these out. They are small and would be a quick stitch.

I used 16ct aida fabric and floss that I had in my stash, some called for and some I used Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe threads. So far I have finished stitching two of the series.

I still need to stitch number 3 and then decide if I will attempt to finish them myself or send them off. And as you can see below, I sent them off the Vonna for finishing.

Winter Cardinal Etching

December 23, 2020 By patgeary

Winter Cardinal Etching was a design by Cecelia Turner that appears in the latest issue of Punch Needle and Primitive Stitcher magazine (2020 Christmas/Winter – page 58). The stitch count was only 50×50 so would be small. It also only called for two colors of floss – Classic Colorworks Sticks and Twigs (which I had in my stash) and Cherry Cobbler (which I did not have.)

I chose a piece of 16ct aida I had in my stash, Parchment, I think that was large enough to stitch this design twice. Instead of Cherry Cobbler, I used Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe Red Rooster on one and Victorian Motto Victorian Red on the other. I also changed the color for the bird’s beak to black and orange.

These are the beginning of my 2021 Christmas presents to be finished as ornaments.

Merry Christmas by All Through the Night

July 25, 2020 By patgeary

I was recently introduced to a new designer, All Through the Night, and ordered three of her charts. Merry Christmas was one of them. I had recently been given a yard of 18 Count White Opalescent Aida and decided to use a piece of it to stitch this on. I liked the idea of adding some sparkle to this piece. I also had one skein of Gloriana Poinsettia silk that I had received as a gift so chose to use it rather than the called for Valdani Old Brick. I hoped one skein would be enough. The silk thread is lovely to stitch with.

Unfortunately, my picture does not due the fabric justice. It’s sparkly white and looks like snow scattered through the fabric.

And here it is finished as a lovely Christmas ornament by Vonna Pfeiffer, The Twisted Stitcher.

I plan on stitching another one of these soon.

December 17, 2021 – Finished stitching a 2nd one on the same fabric using Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe floss Victorian Christmas and Kris Kringle Green.

Cardinal by Rovaris

March 28, 2020 By patgeary

This is the first design I have stitched from Rovaris. I love cardinals and thought it might make a nice Christmas decoration. I chose to stitch it on 16ct aida from Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe and used VMSS threads. The chart comes with the tassel included. You can order it in the red or blue version.

Cardinal by Rovaris
  • Primitive White
  • Burgundy Ribbons
  • Claret
  • Plantation Brown

The size of the stitched piece is 4 1/4 x 4 7/8 inches.

I may decide at a later date to add some trim to this one as well as the tassel but we shall see.

A Christmas Quaker Medallion

January 14, 2020 By patgeary

A Quaker Christmas Medallion by Guilia Manfredini of Giulia Punti Antichi was published in the August 2015 issue of Just CrossStitch magazine. I had seen the finished ornament posted in another group so went in search of the magazine. Luckily another stitcher saw my post and sent me the magazine.

The recommended fabric was 32ct natural/white dots Belfast petit point linen but I am not a fan of linen or dotted fabric. I chose to stitch it on 28ct Monaco as the lettering and the date is stitched over 1. The recommended floss is Thread Gatherer Silk ‘N Colors so I am using a combination of DMC and Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe Floss.

  • TG 317 Dung Paper/DMC 3011
  • TG 055 Camouflage Green/DMC 936
  • TG 074 in the burgundy/DMC 814

My colors:

  • VMSS Olde Cranberry
  • DMC 936
  • VMSS Something Wicked for the bird.
  • DMC 3011

Now to decide how to finish this one. I also want to stitch another one in brighter colors.

November 2020: And here it is finished by Vonna Pfeiffer.

Joyeux Noel by the Drawn Thread

May 31, 2018 By patgeary

This little beauty has been sitting in the drawer for 15 years as it is now 2018 and I stitched it in 2003. I could not even remember the designer of the chart. When looking over what to send off to be finished, I decided this one deserved it. So off to The Twisted Stitcher it went. I love what she did with it.

Joyeux Noel by The Drawn Thread.

Joyeux Noel by The Drawn Thread finished by The Twisted Stitcher

The design is 63 x 63 stitches and the suggested fabric was 36 Count Summer Khaki Edinburgh linen. I do not stitch on linen but not sure what fabric I used. It looks like either 28 or 32ct lambswool of some kind. The suggested floss was Threadworx and DMC floss and Kreinik blending filament. I can tell I used the Kreinik for the small start at the top of the tree an the rest was probably DMC as that was all I used at the time. Not sure which embellishments came with the kit but the package says: Embellished with beads, jade gemstone hearts and 6mm black buttons. Chart Pack includes chart and embellishments. I see the hearts and black buttons on mine but not the others. I wish I knew what I did with the chart so I could stitch it again.

January Ornament Finish

January 11, 2014 By patgeary

“Peppermint Twist“
Ornament #9

Stitched on 16 ct Khaki Aida. Still needs the candy cane button added but will do that when I decide how to finish it. This is just one of the Little House Needlework Christmas Ornaments I purchased from 123Stitch.com (my favorite on-line site for ordering). Finished piece is much prettier than my picture shows and it is not crooked like the picture. If I could only get the pictures to look as good as the actual piece.
