Home for Christmas by Plum Street Samplers

January 17, 2022 By patgeary

“Home for Christmas” is a cross stitch design by Paulette Stewart of Plum Street Samplers.  The design is stitched on 36 count linen and the stitch count is 106 wide x 113 high.  The kit contains the chart, 36 count linen, floss, and cotton fabric.

When I first saw this one pictured in one of my Facebook groups, I knew I wanted to stitch it. I believe I purchased it on the secondary market.

Since I normally stitch on aida, I switched out the fabric for a piece of 16ct aida I had in my stash. Unfortunately, I failed to note the color which is a mottled tan. I used the called for colors which were included but since I am stitching with two strands will use Victorian Motto floss or Gentle Arts Currant since I am running out of the called for Crimson.

My notes indicate I actually started stitching this on April 6, 2020 but I had only done the top border. I decided in January 2022 I had to do some more stitching on this one BEFORE I could start a new one.

Home for Christmas – January 2022

Ran out of two colors of floss so I am putting this aside until my next floss order arrives.

Home for Christmas progress 1.22.2022

Finished stitching this one last night (2/10/2022). I will probably frame it and add it to my Christmas wall in the craft room.

Home for Christmas completed 2/9/2022

It’s now August 11, 2022 and I am finally getting around to finishing this one. Not quite sure if I am going to stain or paint the board but the finished project will join the Christmas wall in my craft room.

Easter Parade by Blackbird Designs

February 20, 2021 By patgeary

Easter Parade by Blackbird Designs was first published in 2005. It had been Out of Print for quite some time. In July 2019, it was reprinted and released to the delight of many stitchers. The Fans of Blackbird Designs Facebook group will be started an Easter Parade SAL (Stitch-a-Long) in March 2021. Come join us! If you are not already a member of the group, when you try and join you MUST SNSWER ALL THREE QUESTIONS to be approved.

I have had this piece kitted up for some time and just needed an excuse to start it.

The fabric is 16ct Melody aida from Fabrics by Stephanie. The floss is a mixture of what is recommended and my substitutes:

  • GA Antique Rose/VMSS Concord Grape

I have decided to finish this as a mounted piece I can display on a small easel and perhaps switch it out depending on the season. Vonna Pfeiffer, The Twisted Stitcher has an excellent tutorial on how to do this. See Mounted Flat Ornament

Pictured below is the stitched piece mounted on the backing board and the fabric I will use behind it.

Backing Fabric is Island Batik Grape

Unfortunately I had to order some bigger pieces of backing board so the final finish will have to wait until it is delivered.

Trix or Treat by Blackbird Designs

November 6, 2020 By patgeary

Trix or Treat by Blackbird Designs is copyright 2005 and is now Out of Print. NOTE: Reprinted in November 2021. The book includes eight separate designs. I am not normally a Halloween stitcher but the more I saw one of the projects posted, the more I wanted to stitch it.

Trix or Treat is the design and I LOVE the bird in this one and it looked like it would be a quick stitch. I chose a piece of 16ct Carmel Macchiato from Fabrics by Stephanie and switched out a couple of the threads since I did not have them in my stash.

  • WDW Mascara
  • WDW Sweet Potato
  • WDW Juniper/ DMC 936
  • WDW Pecan/VMSS Antique Gold
  • WDW Swamp Water

Now I just need to decide how to finish it. Probably a small pillow for my basket of smalls.

May 2022 – I had originally thought of framing this but decided to use one of the boards I bought at Michael’s instead.

Honeybee Hill by Blackbird Designs

June 13, 2020 By patgeary

Honeybee Hill was released in 2013 and I have had it in my stash for a while. It contains two designs, the main chart and Her Majesty’s pincushion. Unfortunately, the chart is now out of print.

Honeybee Hill chart cover

I recently purchased two of Robert LeHay’s 8″ Recessed Lid Shaker boxes and decided to stitch Honeybee Hill for the top of one of the boxes.

I am stitching it on a piece of 16ct aida which I lightly dyed with coffee. Looks like a child’s cup of milk with a bit of coffee added. I switched some of the recommended colors for Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe threads.

  • GA Brandy/ VMSS Waves of Grain
  • GA Copper
  • GA Dried Thyme
  • GA Endive/VMSS Rosebud Leaves
  • GA Maple Syrup
  • GA Nutmeg (DMC 975)
  • GA Piney Woods/VMSS Olive Branch
  • GA Pumpkin Patch
  • GA Pumpkin Pie/VMSS Pumpkin Bread

  • GA Walnut
  • GA Wheat Fields/VMSS King’s Ransom

Winter Valentine by The Blue Flower

December 26, 2019 By patgeary

When I first saw Winter Valentine posted, I knew I wanted to stitch it as cardinals are my very favorite bird as well as the state bird of Virginia. The Blue Flower is a new designer for me so I checked first to see if her charts were printed in color or black and white. Color charts are very hard for me to stitch from because of my eyesight.

Winter Valentine chart by The Blue Flower

I had recently purchased a Christmas frame from Michael’s Craft store and wanted to use this design for it. I left off the border as the picture needed to fit into a 5×7 opening. I used a mystery piece of mottled gold 16ct aida with some of the recommended floss and some Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe threads.

Winter Valentine framed
  • DMC 937/ Varigated Pine Bough
  • DMC 3865 / Primitive White
  • DMC 22 (one of the newest colors)
  • DMC 523
  • DMC 535
  • DMC 3045
  • DMC 3371
  • DMC 3776
  • DMC 501/ Holly Leaves
  • DMC 890/ Varigated Pine

I’ll be stitching this one again for a different finish and will include the border and the text.

Pumpkin Farm by Blackbird Designs

September 24, 2019 By patgeary

Pumpkin Farm is #10 in the Anniversaries of the Heart series by Blackbird Designs. I knew when I saw Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppes new Glorious Autumn floss Collection, that some of the colors would be perfect for this design.

Pumpkin Farm chart cover

The design itself is 75w x 85h. The recommended fabric is 30ct Kona by R & R Reproductions. I do not like stitching on linen so chose a piece of 15ct Fiddler’s Lite that I had in my stash.

Recommended floss/My VMSS Floss

  • CC Gingersnap/VMSS Country Tan
  • CC Peanut Brittle/VMSS Tea Party
  • GA Apple Cider/VMSS Stitching Together
  • GA Burnt Orange/VMSS Autumn Range B
  • GA Endive?VMSS Spring Grass
  • GA Harvest Moon/VMSS Falling Leaves
  • GA Old Purple Paint (used this one)
  • GA Sarsparilla/VMSS Kansas Cone Flower
  • GA Tarnished Gold/VMSS Mixed Wood Brown
  • WDW Pecan/VMSS Heirloom Pumpkins

Started Stitching: 9/16/2019
Finished Stitching: 9/24/2019

I personalized this one with my little sister’s name Nan. The W is for her surname Wells and the J for her husband Jim. Also included the date of her birth.

On a recent trip to buy some floss for another project, I saw this board on sale for $3.50 and thought it would be perfect for this stitched piece.

A Dog’s Declaration by Ink Circles

May 6, 2019 By patgeary

When I first saw A Dog’s Declaration by Ink Circles, I knew I had to stitch it. Katie, our previous dog, and Shadow, our current dog were/are great pursuers of squirrels. My son knew how much I like it so he gave me the money to order the chart.

A Dog's Declaration chart.

A Dog’s Declaration chart

The design size is fairly big 243w x 315h. The recommended fabric is 36ct Tycho by Picture This Plus but I am going to stitch it on 16ct cream Aida as that is easier on my eyes. The recommended thread was 6ply cotton floss by Valdani. While I loved the variegated colors, I did not want to spend that much money on them and I had heard that they shredded easily. So I went with my very favorite floss, Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe floss.

  • P1 Old Brick/VM Burnt Red
  • P2 Olive Green/VM Dried Clover
  • P6 Rusted Orange/VM Rust Swirl
  • P8 Old Rose/VM Rose Plum

Blackbird’s Winter Delivery

April 18, 2019 By patgeary

Blackbird’s Winter Delivery by Blackbird Designs is #5 in the Loose Feathers series.  Behind the blackbird is a rather sparse Christmas tree with a star on top. It is now OOP. It had never really appealed to me in the past but the more I saw the finished stitched pieces, the more I liked it. So I finally decided it was one I had to stitch. Since it is not a chart I own, I borrowed it from a fellow stitcher.

The recommended fabric is 28 ct. Cranberry Bog by R & R Reproductions which is no longer available. But I had a piece of 16ct Aida from Nancy Turner. that I thought would work. The closest DMC color looks like 3806.

Sunflowers in Summer

November 2, 2018 By patgeary

Sunflowers in Summer is a chart by Country Cottage Needleworks. The chart is dated 2011 but I bought the fabric, floss and chart in April 2014. It has languished in the “To Do Pile” until October 2018.

Sunflowers in Summer by Country Cottage Needleworks.

The suggested fabric was 30ct Cocoa Linen by Weeks Dye Works. I chose to stitch it on 14ct Mushroom Aida using the recommended colors:

  • DMC 434
  • DMC 436
  • DMC 3031
  • DMC White
  • Crescent Colors Sunflower
  • Gentle Arts Baby Spinach
  • Weeks Dye Works Dried Sage

Stitch Count: 143w x 143 high which made the stitched area 10 1/4 x 10 1/4 on 14ct.

As I progressed with my stitching, the lettering for the words, sunflowers and summer was too light so I added Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe Olde Gold to the CC Sunflower for the lettering.

Started stitching: October 20, 2018
Finished Stitching: November 6, 2018

I decided to have this one finished as a flatfold. Didn’t The Twisted Stitcher, Vonna Epperson Pfeiffer,  do a wonderful job of finishing it?
