Lydia R. Cohagan by Blackbird Designs

October 29, 2022 By patgeary

Lydia R. Cohagan by Blackbird Designs was part of the Country Sampler’s 2022 Schoolgirl Sampler “Threads of History” club. I am not a member, but they also offered the kit at a non-member price. Since Blackbird Designs is my very favorite designer, I bought the kit which included the chart, linen and floss. Since I do not stitch on linen, I switched the linen out for 16ct Regency aida by Picture This Plus. The included fabric was 36ct Oatmeal by Fiber on a Whim.

Lydia Cohagan Supplies

I plan on stitching this one in honor of my paternal grandmother, Sammie Bayless Little who was born in 1890.

The photo is of my paternal grandmother, Sammie Bayless Little and me. She died when I was eleven. I was her first grandchild. The sampler is in her honor. Now to decide on a frame.

Autumn on the Square

October 22, 2022 By patgeary

Autumn on the Square by ScissorTail Designs was released at Needlework Expo 2022. This is a new designer to me, and I ordered two separate chart packs. As soon as I saw it, I knew I had to stitch this series since Fall is my very favorite time of year.

Autumn on the Square cover

I’m going to stitch these on 14ct Fiddler’s Lite with my own color choices.

  • DMC 436/Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe Harvest
  • DMC 611/Weeks Dye Works Putty
  • DMC 612/Weeks Dye Works Cornsilk
  • DMC 3012/Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe Mountain Laurel
  • DMC 3826/Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe Heirloom Pumpkin

Now to decide on finishing fabrics.

Cliffside Stitches Cross-Stitch Tiles SAL

October 15, 2022 By patgeary

I am not sure now how I discovered this SAL (Stitch-a-Long) but decided to participate. It was described as:

If you’d like to stitch a cross-stitch sampler that’s inspired by the global needlework heritage, this SAL is for you! There are 36 squares arranged in a grid, featuring a variety of motifs that are reminiscent of traditional folk designs from around the world. Each week, the chart for a new square will be released. You can stitch the sampler in monochrome, in four-color and two-color versions, or in any color combination that you like.

SAMPLE OF SQUARE 1

I joined the group and downloaded the various files to try and decide how to stitch this and what colors to use. I really do not have room on my walls for a large piece and this piece measures 229 x 229 which on 14ct fabric would be 16 3/8 x 16 3/8. Even on 16ct, it would be large 14 3/8 x 14 3/8. I made the decision to stitch them as individual blocks in solid colors (one color for each block.) A decorative frame was also included that you could use with each of the individual tiles. Since I have a very large collection of Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe floss, I decided to use that for each block. Perhaps the theme I will use is Autumn, Winter, Spring and Summer with the colors that bring to mind each season.

If you are not on Facebook, you can still join the Stitch-Alongs – Cliffside Stitches.

Tile 1: I am stitching this one on 14ct Fiddler’s Lite using Autumn in Vermont, a very bright reddish orange. This one took slightly over 5 yards of floss.

Tile #1

Tile 2: Stitched on 14ct Fiddler’s Lite with VMSS Golden Squash.

Tile #2

Tile #3 stitched on 16ct Fiddlers Lite with Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe floss Brick Red which is the color of rich red wine.

Tile #3

Tile #4 stitched on 14ct Opalescent white aida with Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe Christmas Red and Traditional Christmas Green.

Tile #4

Tile #5 stitched on 14ct Opalescent white aida with Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe rim Valentine and Hearth and Home.

Tile #5

Tile #6 stitched on 14ct Opalescent white aida with Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe Christmas Red and Glorious Gold.

Tile #6

Tiles 4, 5, and 6 are going to be finished as flat Christmas ornaments with fabric on the back and twisted cording around the edges and as the hanger. I am using the tutorials by Vonna Pfeiffer, The Twisted Stitcher. How to Make Cording and Flat Ornament

Christmas Tiles 4,5, and 6

Tiles 4, 5, and 6 I have away as Christmas gifts so will need to stitch them again for me.

And the first three tiles in the series stitched in Autumn colors were finished as small pin pillows to be displayed in one of the dough bowls.

Tile #7 – stitched on 14ct white aida using Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe Mint Swirl floss.

Tile #7 with backing fabric

Tile #9 – stitched on 14ct white aida using Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe Dipped in Purple floss.

Tile #10 – stitched on 14ct White aida using Pearsall’s silk floss Goblin Green and Indian Pink. This is the first and the last time I will use this floss.

Tile #12 front and back

Tile #11 stitched on 14ct uses Color and Cotton Flagstone floss.

Tile #12 stitched on 14ct white aida using Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe Wild Azure floss.

Tile #12 front and back

Tile #13 stitched on14ct white aida using Color and Cotton Clay.

Tile 313 finishing fabric by Blackbird Designs

Tile #14 – stitched on 14ct white aida using Au Ver a Soie 1003 #109 and Soie d Alger #5025.

Tile #15 stitched on 14ct cream aida using Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe Tropical Orchid. Lady Dot Finishing kit was called Faded Violets.

Tile #15

Tile #16 using 14ct cream aida with Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe Frog Prince. Lady Dot Finishing kit called a Little Sparkle.

Tile #16

Tile #17 on 14ct cream aida using VMSS Ocean and Lady Dot Tidal Pool.

Tile #17

Tile #18 using 14ct cream aida with VMSS Stitching Parlor and Lady Dot Green Green Grass of Home.

Tile # 18

Tile #35

I am not going to stitch these in any particular order, so Tile #35 is stitched on 20ct white aida over 2 using Au Ver A Soie – Soie d’Alger 1714 Bleu Henri II that was a gift from a fellow stitcher. It was a dream to stitch with. I’ll eventually finish it as a small pillow or ornament.

Acorn Gathering Sewing Roll

September 12, 2022 By patgeary

I LOVE Autumn designs and colors. They are some of my favorites to stitch. When I first saw Acorn Gathering Sewing Roll by Brenda Gervais, I knew I wanted to stitch it. It was first released in 2014 but I did not see it until 2022. It was only available from Country Sampler in Spring Green, WI so I ordered it from them.

Chart for a sweet little Autumn-themed sewing roll.  Furry-tailed little squirrels, acorn motifs, big potted mumms along with some quaker-inspired motifs adorn the flap of the sewing roll.  Old mother of pearl buttons and vintage Taffee Beige seam tape adds just the right finishing details to the sewing roll.  And like any good little squirrel, we have hidden a surprise project to stitch inside of the pattern.  It will be a great little companion piece to the sewing roll!  The design is worked over two threads on the 40 count Doubloon linen.  The roll is backed in a coordinating calico.  Stitch count – 160 wide x 67 high.

Acorn Gathering Sewing Roll cover

I selected a piece of 16ct Everything Else by Mystic Fabrics and a mixture of the recommended floss and DMC to stitch this one. I plan on finishing it as a drum once it is stitched.

Now to finish it as a drum.

Thankful Sampler by Lizzie Kate

September 9, 2022 By patgeary

A few days ago, I was going through some boxes looking for some aperture cards for a friend. I did not find them, but I did come across a project my mom had stitched sometime before she died in 1999. The chart with the embellishments was also in the box.

Thankful Sampler cover

My mom was my stitching buddy. I taught her to cross stitch after I learned, and she loved it as much as I did. I decided to go ahead and add the embellishments and frame this in her memory. The stitched piece fit into a 6×8 frame but had too much space on the sides compared to the top. I added a piece of complementary fabric and rick rack to the side and am happy with the finished piece. It reminds me of her and her love of a hobby we shared. I did flip the apple charm on the pie before adding the glass.

Pomegranate Santa by Plum Street Samplers

August 29, 2022 By patgeary

You really can never tell what you might find when you start going through drawers where you store cross stitch stuff. I stitched this one back in 2017. Pomegranate Santa by Plum Street Samplers stitched on 16ct Heritage by Picture This Plus with called for colors.

Started April 1, 2017
Failed to note when I finished.

I went looking for a frame for this one and picked out two red frames I liked. The thin profile was too red; the darkish red was too wide so settled on a dark brown one. Fits a standard size 8×10. It will now join the other residents of my Christmas wall.

Without a Mouse

August 17, 2022 By patgeary

Without a Mouse by Blackbird Designs is now Out of Print. Alma has indicated it will NOT be reprinted anytime soon.

Without a Mouse chart cover

Since some of the wording is over one, I decided to use using 25ct cream Jobelin (I think) and Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe Chimney Sweep, Autumn Range B (pumpkin) and Hot Chili Peppers. It is a BIG pumpkin.

I found a clearance frame that is the perfect size for the finished piece (8×10).

Summer Sweets

August 11, 2022 By patgeary

Summer Sweets is the 2nd release of The Early Bird Pinkeep Club by Scattered Seed Samplers. I do not belong to the club but someone on one of the Stash selling sites offered the kit at a good price, so I snapped it up. The kit comes with the chart, linen, floss and finishing supplies. Since this one was to be stitched on 36ct linen, I switched it out to a piece of 18ct aida I had in my stash. I normally prefer 16ct but I wanted to make sure I had enough of the finishing fabric so used 18ct. I also use two strands of floss when I stitch so will need to add some more but since it is DMC, I already have most of it. Missing two colors which I will pick up next time I go out.

Union Forever

July 26, 2022 By patgeary

Union Forever was designed by Maggie Bonanomi for Blackbird Designs. In the past, I had never really had any desire to stitch this particular design. Then a number of stitchers shared their finished projects, and it grew on me. When the chart was donated as a giveaway, I decided to stitch it first.

Union Forever cover

I selected a piece of 16ct aida I had in my Stash. I’m not sure of the color but it is a mottled tan. I used mostly the recommended floss with a couple of changes.

  • WDW Havana
  • GA Gold Leaf
  • WDW Bark/DMC 3781
  • GA Tin Bucket
  • GA Raspberry Parfait/DMC 3721
  • GA Barn Gray/VMSS Bedazzled
  • GA Chamomile
  • WDW Swamp Water
  • GA Cidermill Brown

I started stitching on July 15, 2022

Finished Stitching: July 29, 2022

I decided to finish this one as a drum. Finally using all the crushed walnut shells, I bought a couple of years ago. I followed Vonna Epperson Pfeiffer’s drum making tutorial in the Summer 2022 issue of Punch Needle and Primitive Stitcher magazine. Only thing I did different is to use a circle of foam core rather than all matboard so my pins would actually stick into something while I stitched the top and bottom to the drum tube. Vonna also has a video tutorial on finishing as a drum. I followed her tutorial for making the twisted cording. Next time I will use more strands to make it thicker. The little stuffed heart was from the Summer Sweets kit.

Grandma’s Garden

July 23, 2022 By patgeary

Grandma’s Garden is a chartpak offered by Hands on Design. It’s dated 2014. It shows as Out of Stock right now. The chartpack includes two charts, buttons and trims. You supply the fabric and floss.

Grandma’s Garden chart cover

The pillow has a stitch count of 56 x 65. Recommended fabric was 32ct Weeks Dye Works Light Khaki. I chose to use a piece of 16ct aida I had in my stash and Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe floss Wild Coneflower. It was a really quick stitch. I still need to attach the buttons and decide if I am going to finish it as a small pillow OR frame it.

I’m thinking perhaps I will frame it in a cream-colored rustic frame.

Grandma’s Garden framed

I used a simple white 5×7 readymade frame for this.
