Petites Lettres Rouges SAL

February 18, 2020 By patgeary

Petites Lettres Rouges is a free chart offered by Blackbird Designs in 2009. The Fans of Blackbird Designs Facebook group decided to stitch this one as a SAL (Stitch-a-Long) in 2020. Since the chart was free anyone in the group was free to join us. We each picked our favorite fabric and floss colors to use. I decided to use 28ct rose Monaco that I had in my stash and Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe floss (Claret, February Flowers, and Forever in My Heart.)

We started stitching on February 15th, but you are free to start at any time. This one I am going to stitch in memory of my paternal grandmother Sammie Lipscomb Bayless who was born in 1890.

The newest release from Barb and Alma of Blackbird Designs is All Joys for Thine.

All Joys for Thine chart cover.
Chart Cover All Joys for Thine

This one is stitched on 36ct Heartland linen from Picture This Plus using Weeks Dye Works and Classic Colorworks floss  (Barn Door, Cinnamon Toast, Fool’s Gold, Hazelnut, Pine Needles, Polliwog, Stormy Night) and Weeks Dye Works (Dirt Road, Sage, Sandcastle). The stitch count is 165w x 135h which makes the stitched size on 36 or 18ct 9 1/8 x 7 1/2. If there is no over 1 stitches, I will use 16ct aida which will make the stitched size 10 3/8 x 8 1/2. Another beautiful chart from my favorite designers.

Alphabet Heart Sampler

January 26, 2020 By patgeary

I first saw this chart featured on the Dyeing to Stich Facebook page and went searching for it. Turns out it was posted on DMC Threads Blog as a Back to School Freebie. The last post to this blog is dated 2015 so I am not sure it is being kept up. The chart is apparently no longer available. If I am able to locate it again, I will post a link. Glad I saved it the first time around.

The picture shown above is from the DMC Threads post and shows the chart stitched with DMC Variations. Others have stitched this chart in shades of pink to rose.

Dyeing to Stitch offers a pale pink linen in a variety of counts to stitch this with Classic Colorworks Rosebud thread. If you are a member of the Dyeing to Stitch Facebook group, you can view a photo of the finished piece.

FEBRUARY 2021 I recently saw a couple of folks post this in a Facebook stitching group I belong to and decided to contact DMC to see if the chart was posted anywhere and if I could share it. They graciously sent me the original chart which I am sharing here. There is also a jpg image that may print a slight bit sharper.

In looking through my stash, I already had a piece of 16ct cream aida gridded to the correct size so decided to use it with three shades of Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe floss, Red Rooster, Old Red Roses, and Fairy Pink.

I finished stitching this one on February 20, 2021. I thought I had a piece of fabric I could use for the back but it is to red rather than a cranberry red so will need to keep looking. I am glad to finally have this one stitched.

And here it is June 2021 and it has been finished and on the way home to me.

Home of a Needleworker

January 6, 2020 By patgeary

Home of a Needleworker by Little House Needleworks has been in my stash for quite a few years now. The Little House Needleworks Facebook group offered a Samplers Sunday SAL for 2020 and I figured this might just be the encouragement I needed to get started. The official starting date was December 29, 2019 and while I had my supplies assembled, I did not actually start stitching until January 4, 2020.

Supplies for Home of a Needleworker

I chose to stitch this one on 16ct Heartland aida from Picture This Plus using Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe threads.

  • DMC Ecru/VMSS Olde Buttercream
  • DMC 355/VMSS Autumn Bounty Dark
  • DMC 356/VMSS Autumn Bounty Light
  • DMC 420/VMSS Primitive Stitching
  • DMC 729/VMSS Dried Cinnamon
  • DMC 869/VMSSS titching Together
  • DMC 3051/VMSS Fern Fronds
  • DMC 3052/VMSS Spring Grass
  • DMC 3371/VMSS Harvest Brown
  • DMC 3828/VMSS Summer Playhouse
Progress as of January 5, 2020

I put the final stitches in this piece on April 30, 2020. I’m going to have a friend help me finish it as a quilted wall hanging.

I went to visit my friend, Beryl Lawson, who is a quilter and fabric collector. I wanted to see if she had anything in her fabric collection that might work with this piece as a wall hanging. Look at this beautiful fabric she gave me.

Now I need to get to work finishing this piece which I am going to hang on the door of my craft room/office.

And here it is finished and ready to hang. I had a hard time sewing a straight line because of my poor eyesight and I could not hold the IPad straight enough to get a good picture.

Bristol Grace by Dutch Treat Designs

December 28, 2019 By patgeary

I first saw Bristol Grace posted in a group as part of a discussion on Bristol Orphanage Samplers. I was intrigued with it and the monochromatic color scheme which appealed to me as well as the smaller size.

Bristol Grace Sampler Cover.

This sampler is in the style of the samplers stitched by the girls living in the Muller Orphan Homes in Bristol, England. It is not a reproduction of an original 1800’s sampler. All the alphabets and motifs in this design were stitched in orphan needlework. This design is a tribute to the intricate and amazing original Bristol samplers.

The stitch count for this sampler is 133w x 175h and the recommended fabric was 14ct or 28ct over 2. I chose to use 16ct antique white aida that I had in my stash. The recommended floss was Caron Wildflowers. I am going to use Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe floss Berry Wine which is a variegated cranberry color.

November 2020 This past week, I decided to go on a framing binge. I had four pieces I had stitched but not framed. Right now they are just pined and ready to go into the frames but I still need to order glass and spacers. I used a slightly different process this time so am including pictures of that process.

First I measure each piece and use a running stitch all the way around so that I have a line to follow since I cannot see the holes without using a magnifier. I pin each piece to the foam core on all four sides.

Stitched piece pinned on all four sides

Once I am sure everything is even, I flip the piece and use stitchery tape to hold down the excess fabric and hand sew all four corners so they lay flat.

Back of stitched piece mounted to foam core

I then check to make sure all little pieces of thread or dog hair is removed from the front of the stitched piece.

Front of stitched piece mounted on foam core

Next I would assemble the entire project, glass, spacers, stitched piece and backing board. Since I am missing some of the supplies, the stitched piece is just sitting in the frame which is black.

Oh Joyous Day

October 29, 2019 By patgeary

Oh Joyous Day by Blackbird Designs was released at the Spring Fling Retreat at Sitchville USA. I was lucky enough to buy it at the Spring Retreat held at Dyeing to Stitch in Virginia Beach. Right now (October 2019) it is available exclusively through Stitchville USA AND at Dyeing to Stitch in Virginia Beach (757-366-8740).

My interpretation of Oh Joyous Day will be a bit different than the chart. I am stitching on 16ct Colonial Parchment aida by Hand Dyed Fabrics by Stephanie with recommended threads except for the border where I am using Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe threads. Bands will be straight cross stitch rather than satin stitches because aida does not lend itself to the satin stitch and have it look nice.

I am going to stitch this one in honor of my parents, using either their first names or initials and the date of their marriage.

Started Stitching: September 27, 2019

Echoing Evergreens by Tempting Tangles Designs

September 8, 2019 By patgeary

Echoing Evergreens is another of the beautiful designs offered by Deborah Dick who is Tempting Tangles Designs as a SAL. I had already stitched three of her other designs:

  • Swans and Shears Mystery SAL
  • Wildflower Woodland Quaker
  • Catch the Wind Mystery SAL

and I knew I wanted to add this one to my collection. Her SAL’s are only $5 for the chart presented in 16 parts. I faithfully downloaded each piece of the project as offered but never really got the chance to start it although I had figured out the fabric and perhaps floss I wanted to use.

The design size of the entire project is 124 x 124 and the recommended fabric was Wichelt 28ct Jobelan Queen Anne’s Lace which is a mottled white and pale green. I knew I would never be able to see well enough to grid the fabric so chose a light green 14ct Aida I had in my stash.

The project calls for Dinky Dyes thread but I wanted to try some of the Valdani 3ply floss. Another stitcher sent me some to try out. It is beautiful but was a bit to thick for my fabric and kept knotting so I decided to switch it out for my favorite floss by Nancy Turner of Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe. I love her floss and have used it on many projects now. The colors I selected were:

  • Mountain Pines (very dark green)
  • In My Garden (lighter green)
  • Kansas Cone Flower (orange/brown/gold color)

I started stitching on September 4, 2019.

Come Into My Garden by Blackbird Designs

August 15, 2019 By patgeary

Come Into My Garden was introduced at the Summer Stitch Camp held at the Country Sampler in Spring Green WI in June 2019. It is available exclusively from that shop as a kit. Please note, the sampler in the picture is not finished as Barb ran out of time but the full chart is included.

Come Into My Garden chart cover

I wanted to stitch this piece but did not want to purchase it as a kit as it came with 36ct linen which I cannot see to stitch on and I wanted to change out much of the floss for Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe floss. I was luck enough to find another stitcher who was willing to let me borrow her chart.

I ordered a piece of 16ct Wren by Picture This Plus and selected the floss I wanted to use. On 16ct, the design size is larger measuring 15 3/8 by 15 5/8.

The recommended colors with my changes are listed below:

  • WDW adobe/VMSS Rust
  • WDW Bee’s Knees/VMSS Barnwood Tan
  • WDW Caper/VMSS Mountain Laurel
  • WDW Chickpea/VMSS Spiced Cider
  • WDW Cinnabar 10 yards (I need more since I am stitching with 2 strands
  • WDW Confederate Gray/VMSS Frog Prince
  • WDW Deep Sea
  • WDW Dirt Road/VMSS 1840 Brass
  • WDW Dolphin/VMSS Twitterpated
  • WDW Oscar 10 yrds/VMSS Rosebud Leaves and VMSS Hollyhock Leaves. I used Rosebud Leaves for the border and Hollyhock Leaves for all the plant stems and leaves to make sure I had enough. The two colors are almost identical.
  • WDW Pelican Gray/VMSS Toad Spell
  • WDW Sandcastle/VMSS Desert Grass
  • WDW Schneckly/VMSS Memory Quilt
  • WDW Sanguine
  • WDW Straw/VMSS Golden Sand

I started stitching this on August 14, 2019.

I finished stitching this piece on August 31, 2019 with the exception of adding my mother’s name. Trying to decide on Mom’s Garden, Marge Little, or Mrs. L which was my father’s nickname for her.

And here it is October 27, 2019 and the project is now pinned and laced and in the frame. This is one of my favorite framed I have ordered and used in the past. Unfortunately, I think it is being discontinued.

We Live in Hope by Blackbird Designs

May 13, 2019 By patgeary

We Live in Hope was one of the projects at the Blackbird Designs Retreat held in Virginia Beach at Dyeing to Stitch. The chart itself was based on an antique sampler shared by Barb and Alma.

Antique Sampler that inspired We Live in Hope

The kit we received included the chart, fabric 36ct Vintage Honey by R & R Reproductions and the recommended floss.

We Live in Hope kit.
  • WDW Beige
  • WDW Blue Jay
  • WDW Bright Leaf
  • WDW Caper
  • WDW Cocoa
  • WDW Deep Sea
  • WDW Garrison Green
  • WDW Kris’ Bon Bon
  • WDW Red Pear
  • WDW Williamsburg

I chose to stitch mine on 16ct Toasted Almond from Fabrics from Stephanie using the recommended floss. If you choose to stitch this one and use two threads rather than one, you will need additional skeins of some of the colors Caper, Cocoa, Garrison Green and Red Pear.

The Bells on Christmas Day

March 1, 2019 By patgeary

The Bells on Christmas Day is one of three new samplers released by Blackbird Designs. The other two are Merrily, Merrily We Welcome Spring and Our Lasting Friendship. The Bells was designed exclusively for Attic Needlework in Mesa Arizona and available only through that shop (888-94-ATTIC or 480-898-1838). We are hoping the chart will be available to all shops at the Nashville Needlework Market the first of March 2019.

The recommended fabric is 36ct Oaken by Picture This Plus. I can’t see to stitch on that count and the color is darker than I like, so I chose a 16ct Ecru by Kimberley Smith of To Dye For Fabrics.

The Bells on Christmas Day chart cover.

The recommended floss is a combination of Weeks Dye Works, Crescent Colors, and Gentle Arts. I will be using an assortment of threads from Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe’s two Victorian Christmas Collections.

  • WDW Cocoa (DMC 839)/Black Eyed Susan
  • WDW Dirt Road (DMC 831)/Antique Bronze

The Bells on Christmas Day by Blackbird Designs

Updated: July 9, 2021 After a few years of languishing in the drawer of finished projects, I finally ordered a frame for this one. Unfortunately, once it arrived and I tried it with the stitched piece, it was just not a good fit. To “in my face.” How could I tone it down so that I would be happy with it.

Bells on Christmas Day frame BEFORE using Rub and Buff

A search of Google comes up with a product called Rub and Buff. I watched a couple of videos and decided to give it a try. I ordered two tubes, Antique Gold and European Gold. Once it arrived, I gave it a try and liked the end result. So The Bells on Christmas Day is now framed and ready to hang on my Blackbird Design Christmas wall.

While it is messy to use, it did the job.
