Tiny Tree Tops, Rose or Thyme by Blackbird Designs

January 13, 2019 By patgeary

Barb Adams and Alma Allen introduced Tiny Tree tops, Rose or Thyme at the Shepherd’s Retreat 2016.  While I did not attend the retreat, I was lucky enough to be able to borrow the pattern and stitch it. I used the called for threads (week Dye Works) but chose to stitch it on 16ct Doubloon Aida from Picture This Plus rather than the called for 32ct.

Robert Louis Stevenson’s “A Child’s Garden of Verses” contains many poems which describe the world through the eyes of the younger generation. Here is one in which conveys the magic of a flower garden.

The Flowers

All the names I know from nurse:
Gardener’s garters, Shepherd’s purse,
Bachelor’s buttons, Lady’s smock,
And the Lady Hollyhock.

Fairy places, fairy things,
Fairy woods where the wild bee wings,
Tiny trees for tiny dames –
These must all be fairy names!

Tiny woods below whose boughs
Shady fairies weave a house;
Tiny tree-tops, roses or thyme,
Where the braver fairies climb!

Fair are grown-up people’s trees,
But the fairest woods are these;
Where if I were not so tall,
I should live for good and all.

UPDATE: June 2019

Rather than frame this one, I decided to have it finished as a drum. Beautifully finished by The Twisted Stitcher.

Needlework ABC’s by Little House Needleworks

November 24, 2018 By patgeary

Needlework ABC’s is another one of the long, skinny samplers by Little House Needleworks.

Needlework ABC's by Little House Needleworks - Cover.

Needlework ABC’s by Little House Needleworks – Cover.

I really like them because they can go in small width wall spaces and not take up a huge amount of room. The recommended fabric is 32 Ct. Confederate Gray linen. I stitched mine on 16ct Cafe Mocha with the recommended Classic Colorworks and DMC floss :

  • Antique Lace
  • Calico Kitty
  • Cocoa Bean
  • Pebble Beach
  • Weeping Willow
  • DMC 422
  • DMC 951

Stitch Count: 39W x 311H

Needlework ABC's Finished piece.

Needlework ABC’s Finished piece

Fast forward to February 2021. I saw a finish on the Little House and Country Cottage Stitching Group on Facebook and decided to give it a try. Thanks to Vonna Pfeiffer, The Twisted Stitcher for the idea and to Janice Wright Greene for helping me with the instructions. First, I ordered the spool from My Stylish Market on Etsy and waited for it to be delivered. Then the assembly began. After several mistakes which included lots of ripping out, here is the finished piece. Not perfect BUT I am happy with it for my first try.

And I just ordered three more of the spools. This wooden spool is is made of one piece of hardwood, not glued, so it is very high quality. It measures about 4 inches (actual is 3 7/8″) high by just under 2 3/8 inches in diameter, and has a lovely old patina. They originate from a supplier in Maine. A set of three spools is $25.00.

Forever Love 50th Anniversary

November 10, 2018 By patgeary

I first stitched Forever Love by Silver Creek Samplers for my husband back in 2014. At the time, I knew I wanted to stitch it again for my step-daughter and her husband for their 50th wedding anniversary in 2018. The full verse is “Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things” and is from 1 Corinthians 13:7

I stitched the piece on 16ct Aida (not sure what color, but neutral) but wanted to do something special with the framing. I intended to send it off to Jill Rensel so that she and Amber could work their magic. I saw another piece posted on their website that used a ceramic heart as part of the design. I asked the question where I could order one like it. SashleeCeramics was the answer so I wrote to her explaining what I wanted and ordered it.

Once the ceramic heart was delivered, I packaged it and the stitched piece and mailed it off to Jill and Amber. Their lead time is 2+ months so I sent it early enough to get it back in time for the August anniversary. I am extremely happy with how the finished piece turned out.

Vintage Birds by Jeannette Douglas Designs

April 3, 2018 By patgeary

When I first saw this chart as one of the sneak peeks from the Nashville Needlework Market in 2017, I knew I wanted to stitch it. I ordered the chart from Crazy Annie’s along with a number of other Nashville releases.

Wildflower Woodland Quaker by Tempting Tangles Designs

February 24, 2018 By patgeary

I have NEVER been a fan of Mystery Projects. I want to see what the finished project is going to look like BEFORE I order it or start stitching. I belong to a number of Facebook Cross Stitch groups and someone posted a picture of a portion of the Wildflower Woodland Quaker by Tempting Tangle Designs. It was enough to pique my interest so I went exploring.

The project would be released as 16 separate charts spaced about every two weeks apart. The cost was only $5. so I figured I did not have much to lose if I did not like it.

Recommended Fabric: even weave or linen, 32 count;
Design size is 164w X 164h
Finished size on 32 count if worked over 2 = 10-1/4w X 10-1/4h inches
Each of the 16 sections is 41 x 41 stitches

I purchased the chart, signed up for the Facebook SAL group and downloaded all of the available sections. Since 32ct fabric is too hard for me to stitch on because of my eyes, I selected a 16ct cream Aida that I had in my stash. I also changed out some of the called for DMC threads for Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe threads which is some of my favorite floss.

  • DMC 597 turquoise
  • DMC 611 Drab Brown
  • DMC 642 Beige Gray Dark/VMSS Mocha Tan
  • DMC 644Beige Gray Medium
  • DMC 758 Terra Cotta Very Light/VMSS Pink Peony
  • DMC 3021Brown Gray Very Dark
  • DMC 3045Yellow Beige Dark

Flowers for Sarah

November 18, 2017 By patgeary

Some time ago I purchased the book, Thank You Sarah Tobias by Blackbird Designs. The book contains seven stitching projects based on Pennsylvania Dutch motifs from a sampler stitched by Sarah.

The project from this book I most wanted to stitch was Flowers for Sarah Needcase. I knew that I did not want to finish it as a needlecase but loved the sampler itself.

The called for fabric for this project was 30ct Espresso by R & R Reproductions but I chose to use 16ct Legacy Aida by Picture This Plus. I did use the recommended threads, Crescent Colors – Tennessee Red Clay, Poblano Pepper, Little Brown House, and Joshua Tree.

Samplers by The Scarlett House

July 8, 2017 By patgeary

I had never heard of The Scarlett House before until someone posted a preview of this chart from the Nashville Market for 2017. Once I saw it, I decided to order it along with my Blackbird Design charts. It arrived and I stuck it away in the file cabinet.

Samplers by The Scarlett House.

Samplers by The Scarlett House

Then a new Facebook group started called The Scarlett House Stitchers, and I decided to join it. The administrator of the group started a poll to see who might be interested in a Stitch-A-Long (SAL) and Samplers was selected. The suggested fabric was 40ct Ale linen from Picture This Plus. I knew I would never be able to see that small a count fabric even stitched over 2 so I selected 16ct Legacy Aida by Picture This Plus. I also decided to use floss from the Victorian Motto Sampler Shoppe rather than what was recommended. I’ll include the colors I selected later on in this post. The stitch count is 218w x82h. The SAL was going to start on July 1st.

The one part of the design I will need to change is two small birds that are stitched over 1. I am going to try and find two small bird buttons or charms to use in their place.

I gathered my supplies, gridded my fabric and put it on the scroll frame.

Quaker Family Register by Blackbird Designs

June 18, 2017 By patgeary

Quaker Family Register was one of the projects taught by Barb Adams and Alma Allen at the Spring Fling Retreat at Stitchville USA in April 2017. While I did not personally attend the Retreat, a stitching friend offered to lend me the chart to stitch. NOTE: This chart is now available in And Blossom as the Rose released at the Nashville Market 2018.

Quaker Family Register Fabric, Chart, and Floss

I chose to stitch this one on 16ct Veldt by Picture This Plus.

I did make some changes from the floss pictured as I stitched. Part way into the project, I decided to stitch this in honor of my paternal grandparents, Leonard Little and Sammie Bayless and their five sons: Adrian (my father), Winston, Clifford, John, and Mahlon. My grandfather was born in Fayettteville TN and they were married there. All but the youngest son was born there so I used that place on the project. Rather than using the initial of the children, I chose to use their first names. Since the dates for the birth of the children were stitched over 1, I chose to omit them. I plan on adding a sheet to the back of the framed piece with all of the information on this family.
